5-15 Report (1/31)

Earlier this week, I went through the journals for Korean Studies and stumbled upon interesting articles that were separate from my original ideas for research and some that provided evidence to my ideas.

I read the title of the journals and read the abstract to find out more details of the journals. For the most part, the title itself provided a great summary on the context of the journal topic. My main focuses were on Japan’s involvement in Korea, the politics of Korea (dictatorships and the current climate), the monarchy (royal families especially Joseon). Most of my finds were what I was looking for, but I ddi find interesting random journals on Tan’gun and the Late Joseon Korean Catholic Archives to satisfy my love for religions and myths.

I found a bunch of journals on comfort women, Japan’s legacy, imperialism, assimilation in politics, and integration in the Korean education), President Park Chung Hee and his role in the nation, and the Mysterious death of Emperor Kojong.

It was through the journal trawling that I refined my research ideas, which is to write more about the colonial period and the Japanese occupation, the dictatorship in South Korea, and the monarchy side of Joseon.

I find that journal trawling is incredibly fun and enjoyable. I find that it is interesting to go through a bunch of journals to find the topic that you want to focus on and that time goes by really quick when you’re having a good time. I guess I am a seasoned historian (Traditional China!!), and it was through that course that I discovered that I really do love researching even though it can be a tiny pain in the butt at times.

Task: Meet with Dr. D later on this week to officially get the seal of approval for research.

I currently do not have any questions.
